Meet Mark and Joyce, two transplanted Cruzans from NC that lived on St. Croix for the two and a half years. Mark and Joyce live on MAJA, a Wright 40’ sailboat and set off to follow their dream to sail through the Virgin Islands. |

Ever had one of those days when you just wanted to shout “I QUIT”, take the big plunge and live your daydreams? Some say that is exactly what we’re doing – although to be honest we’ve been planning this for some time. We’ve lived on MAJA, our 40’ ketch rigged sailboat for the last year, making improvements, and learning how to cope with limited space (for gear and people!). During this time we’ve been talking to anyone and everyone that sails in to Cruz Bay Harbor, trying to get the “scoop” on what to do, how to do it, and most importantly, where are the most scenic anchorages to visit while on our sailabout? |
|
In the couple of weeks before we set sail, the work on MAJA intensified as we hustled to finish up all the little projects that hadn’t quite been finished yet – like installing a new anchor windlass and roller furling gear. We made several trips to the local grocery stores, followed by murmurs of “where in the #@#@# do we put THIS???.” A new cell phone was deemed necessary to stay in touch with our family and friends, although losing our connection to the internet may just turn out to be a real heartbreaker (for Mark anyhow, he’s the real ‘net junkie). We spent our evenings browsing the web on sites like www.GotoStJohn.com, a great site for local activity guides, while making our plans to visit anchorages and attractions around the Virgins. Places with dreamy faraway names like Honeymoon Bay, Little Lameshur Bay, and Great Cruz Bay. Finally the big day for our departure arrived - and so did the winds….about 20 to 25 knots of howling, gusting, blowing winds. So our first day of cruising was to – Christiansted Harbor, all of three miles from our slip at Green Cay Marina. Of course we didn’t sail there directly, rather headed north toward St John for several miles before turning back to the harbor. It provided a good opportunity for our shakedown cruise and we worked out some of the little problems that pop up once you’re living “on the hook”, like finding the annoying squeak from a loose door molding that only makes its’ noise when one’s head hits the pillow. The winds also reminded us of an important rule about sailing in the Virgin Islands, or anywhere else – don’t be in a hurry to get somewhere. It’s much better to relax and go easy rather than try and rush to follow a set schedule. After all, the only time that matters here in the Virgin Islands is yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Next
stop? Cruz Bay, St. John
to check in at the National Park Service for information on using
the mooring system at the various anchorages around the island. |
